Wyoming. "The Equality State"?
So here's the thing. I'm in the habit of looking at the newly issued state quarters when I get them because there's a collector in the fam. We're up to the Western states already - Idaho came out earlier this year, nice, eagle's head. So yesterday I got the new Wyoming quarter and took a close look at it. Really cool - with a cowboy on a bucking bronco. Made me think of Brokeback Mountain, in fact -- you know, the rodeo, Wyoming mountain -- but I was kind of surprised to see the slogan "The Equality State". Equality? As in let's murder Matthew Shepard because he's gay? And then I remembered that Wyoming has also brought us Dick and Lynne Cheney. So it turns out, as I was told by the Tennesseean in our midst, that Wyoming was the first state to grant women the right to vote - in 1869 - hence the Equality State. Well, I'm not going to knock that - but aren't they just a little embarrassed
I figure that if "equality" is what is valued in Wyoming, then clearly "honesty" is not.
